I installed Authentik via helper-scripts approximately a year ago and it's been working great. I attempted today to update via the same script and was met with an initial warning to fix my vCPU and RAM amounts. I did so and rebooted the LXC. I executed the command again and was allowed to proceed. Building proceeded for about 30 minutes until it failed with the last entry in the log.

  • Install older version of Authentik via Helper-scripts approx. a year ago.
  • Use Authentik daily
  • Attempt to update Authentik via update script
  • Use verbose mode when performing update
  • See failure after approx. 30 mins.

There is not much we can do here, the installation is so old that even simple improvements such as version tracking are missing.

Either you rebuild it or you try to rebuild it manually using the install script.

This could be a change in underlying technology stack used. We would most likely need to revise entire script if they introduced some breaking change

@Aareon not sure how you expect us to detect radical changes in the install procedure... They can literaly change one command and install script would fail to produce a good LXC for the user.

These things need to be manually fixed and implemented every time.

@Aareon Not sure if you saw this, but authentik requires upgrades to be done to every point release.

Now, upgrade to each subsequent higher version. That is, upgrade in sequence, do not skip directly to the most recent version.

If you started on release 2024.2, upgrade to 2024.4, then 2024.6, then 2024.8, and so on until you are current.

Maybe modify the update script to default to the latest authentik version, but allow the user the option to select previous versions?

I appreciate all the feedback, as well as the reference. I think at this time I'll migrate away from Authentik as I'd like to spend less time fixing this and more time using my homelab. Maybe at a later date I'll circle back and try to attack this problem.

Edit: I will say that I personally believe that the script should be updated such that it will follow the required update pattern as Authentik demands. Without doing so, I find little value in the script as is. Primarily due to the fact that the "update" behavior provided by the helper-script will almost certainly break any installation that is not automatically updated (which isn't a feature) without manual intervention.
