Creating a Debian LXC with nesting disabled leads to a broken system, with many services failing with status 243/CREDENTIALS. This breaks web console access and probably other things, although you can still get into the container with pct enter or by setting the console mode in the container options to console.

Creating a container with default settings or nesting enabled does work.

It seems like this is a known issue with Debian 13 in Proxmox, this blog post links a solution using lxc.generator to fix when upgrading from Debian 12. Creating a Debian 12 LXC and then following the directions to upgrade to Debian 13 does work.

  1. Run Debian container script
  2. Set up with advanced settings, leave all defaults (hit enter) except disable nesting when prompted.
  3. Web access is broken, systemctl shows system degraded.

Advanced installs with a known bug are difficult. What should we do here? I don't check beforehand whether it's nesting or not. I believe that users should be aware of how and what is being customised. I think this should be addressed in Proxmox or the Proxmox forum. We don't make any changes to the templates, but take them ‘as is’. Debian uses systemd and a modern systemd need nesting. I think there is no reason to disable it.

By the way, there is an adjustment in pve-container: 6.0.19, which should optimise this.)
