Describe the feature you'd like

Page content font size, yet again

Describe the benefits this would bring to existing BookStack users

I know the issue of font size for WYSIWYG editing has been brought up before, but it keeps getting shelved as a non-issue. We love everything about BookStack except for the tiny page content font. We have to move to an alternative. Our team, with a range of ages, find it unusable.

Can the goal of this request already be achieved via other means?

No. Zooming the whole page in the browser is not a workable solution. Well, yes, we can achieve it by going with another app.

Have you searched for an existing open/closed issue?

  • I have searched for existing issues and none cover my fundamental request

How long have you been using BookStack?

Under 3 months

Additional context

No response

Would some custom CSS to globally increase page content text size help? That should be fairy simply to produce, and could be added via BookStack settings.

No. Zooming the whole page in the browser is not a workable solution.

It would help to understand why that is not a workable solution.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the super-fast reply.

Custom CSS would definitely be the ideal solution. We'd be happy just with
a larger default font-size. The problem might just be my lack of knowledge.
I couldn't find the CSS class to modify the page content font-size with,
and some online discussions commented that though the heading font-sizes
are easy to change, the page content font size could not be changed.

We don't want to consider having the user zoom the browser window for a
couple of reasons:

  • Zooming, even if just the text size in the window, also zooms the menu
    text, and thus the layout and some menu options, go off the window, and
    also looks bad.
  • Aside from some fairly technically naive in-house users, we also want
    to have some pages public facing to a non-technical audience. Being
    presented with such a small font might turn some away. Browser zooming
    isn't a good user experience for us.

Other than this one matter that is an issue for us, the app is fantastic. I
hope the problem is just my failure to find the CSS classes, and for
believing what some people wrote in discussions.

Thanks again,
David

Hi @dgarnick,
Thanks for the extra context.

This added via the "Custom HTML Head Content" customization setting should bump almost all text sizes up within page content:

<style>
.page-content {
  font-size: 16px;
}
</style>

You can adjust the 16 up/down as needed. The default is 14.
Generally I've always kept the sizing of page content types parent-relative, which means everything can be scaled via a single size change on the parent like this, but there may be some edge-case formatting options which don't scale, but it might be possible to target them separately if needed.

Doh! Well THAT was easy. Don't know why some say page content font-size
can't be changed. We're fine with the occasional child of page-content not
scaling for the font-size. Spent some time looking at alternatives -
BookStack is a great solution for our priorities - self-hosted, simple,
WYSIWYG & markdown. THANKS
