@Hello everyone...

I'm new to Bookstack.. I just installed the App locally on a fresh Ubuntu working on VMware.. no errors during the installation.. but when the installation is done, tried to open the URL I was asked at the beginning but it give me "Server Not Found"
I tried by calling the server with localhost or its IP.... no chance!

I get redirect to the login URL but afterwards the website return with Server Not Found.

Would anyone give me a tip to let the app work internally? Thanks a lot

Infos:
Ubuntu 20.04
Big Sur (Mac)11.2.3
VMware Fusion 12.1.1
No internet for the Ubunto Server (everything is local)

Error: "Server Not Found)

Hi @sahermanna07,
Based on this it sounds like BookStack might be serving but providing the wrong redirect URL.
In your .env file, Check that you have the APP_URL option set and that it matches your public/browser based URL that you're hosting BookStack on.

Hi @ssddanbrown
please forgive my knowledge...
I checked the .env and it seems to me all fine... where do you think the problem is?

Thanks a lot

Hi @ssddanbrown

I just want to share with you, that I installed the Bookstack on Ubunto 20.04 and named the website http://saher.local because I want to use the app just internally.

Hi @sahermanna07,

"Server not found" is usually a response when the browser can't make a connection at all, rather than an error on BookStack's side. You say you get redirected to login but then see that error, To be that indicates there might be a change of hosts at some point.

Can you confirm that the:

  1. URL you initially attempt access on.
  2. The URL you get redirect to.
  3. The URL set in your .env file under APP_URL.

All start exactly the same? Does the https/http component change at all for any of these? Do they all exactly start as http://saher.local?

For example, if any of them were just saher.local or https://saher.local or http://www.saher.local then those differences could cause issues.

Hello my dear @ssddanbrown

Thank you for your support... Hopefully together we can find the error.

So I reinstalled the app on a brand new Ubuntu 20.04 and I have attached the following screenshots for your review:
I tried also to call the website by its IP... I get redirected to saher.local/login but then the problem comes "Server Not Found"

Hi @sahermanna07,

Within BookStack and apache you're using http://saher.local whereas your browser shows https://www.saher.local.
Try accessing on http://saher.local, Assuming you've setup that domain somewhere to point to your local machine (Or whatever machine is running BookStack).

The www. at the start and https:// parts would both require different server & BookStack configuration to work.

Hello @ssddanbrown

I tried that too but no chance... :(

I found this solution >> in the .env I entered the following address:
APP_URL=http://192.168.206.4 | so it's basically my IP address.

Then the Bookstack is reachable under the localhost or his the local IP BUT not by his name (http://saher.local)

Maybe this a temporary solution to discover the app... but do you still have a tip for me 👍 where I can fix that problem?

PS: I haven't setup the domain somewhere outside of my VMware Ubuntu.

Thank you my dear.

It sounds like there's nothing to tell the browsing system that the host saher.local can be found at the ip address of 192.168.206.4. You'd have to configure the machine (That you're running the browser on) that saher.local can be found at 192.168.206.4. This can often be done via editing a hosts file but it depends on your operating system.

Since there's been no follow-up I'm going to close this. If the issue remains and is something you still require to be fixed please open a new issue, referencing this one.
