The bug

Attempting to generate thumbnails for any images causes the Immich server to crash, with no error messages logged. The thumbnail does not get generated. This happens whether running the thumbnails job, or regenerating the thumbnail for a specific image.

This issue was not present in v1.138.1, but I have experienced it in v1.139 (can't remember the patch version) and above.

Additional information

A few people have been having the same issue in a Discord help desk thread: Immich v1.139+ crashes shortly after starting up

Workaround

A workaround was provided by @ladaniwapa on Discord: setting the following env var in your .env
