Many thumbnails and previews are not showing up after changing thumbnail library location #6969

The bug

In my timeline, many images fails to show thumbnails. This concerns mostly old images, i.e., ones that were added in bulk or have been in the library before I changed the thumbnail directory (I highly suspect there is a connection here). All of my images are in an external library. Below is an example of how these folders look. They fail to load thumbnails and they fail to load preview when clicking.

These files are not corrupted. When I download them through the download button and look at them, they are fine. One such image is pasted below.

Running a job to repair remaining thumbnails only runs it on around 500 images, which the server logs report to be broken - this well might be, but the library has around 20k images and as it seems half of the thumbnails are broken which is significantly more than 500.

The error in the server logs is a 500, file not found, here is an extract

  1. Create a immich library
  2. Run all setup etc
  3. change the thumbnail directory post-hoc
  4. restart server and re-run the thumbnail creation jobs
