  1. Start the server using Quickstart docker compose up -d
  2. Download the iOS and login via the the server URL
  3. Enable backups. Turn off "only on wifi" and turn off "only while charging"

Additional information

  • Interesting that it seems to fail to find any updates (like it can't see the photos in the album) even though visually in the app, the photos are there.
  • If it matters, accessing via NordVPN meshnet (http://somewhere.nord:2283)
  • iCloud and optimised photos not in use at all

The background processes are queued, after that it's in the OS's hands and there's not much you can do. Make sure you've checked all the items listed in https://immich.app/docs/FAQ/#why-is-background-backup-on-ios-not-working.
