The bug

Hi, I have a problem uploading a photo archive from my computer (originals, in HEIC format) - the live photo function doesn't work but the server generates mp4 files (and previews).

When I use the immich app everything is fine but when I want to upload the archive via browser the live photo function is not active.

Best regards.

Reproduction steps

1 - I took a live photo
2 - I uploaded it via the immich app on my phone - everything works, the live photo too
3 - I downloaded this file via browser (original, *.HEIC)
4 - I deleted it from immich
5 - I uploaded it again but this time via browser
The live photo doesn't work this time. Interestingly, the mp4 file is generated (in library/transcoded-videos) but it can't be played in either the browser or the app.

Same/similar issue. In the web app, if I click upload and select a Live Photo from my photo library it uploads as .heif but it is not live when the upload completes.

Edit, additional details:
Mine is a brand new setup, never used Immich before. I am hosting on a Raspberry Pi with docker and Nginx reverse proxy. The Immich app does appear to upload Live Photos successfully, which I can play back. As OP mentioned, it is specifically web upload I’m tryin to use that is not working.

I just tested and live photo uploads work correctly on the web. Here's a few more details:

  • Live photos from an iPhone are explicitly linked together, during upload
  • Live photos parts can be separately uploaded and automatically linked based on some metadata IDs that are included in each file
  • Sometimes LivePhotos don't contain the correct identifiers (I think sometimes this happens when the file is edited), in this case there is an option in the web-ui to manually link a still photo and a motion video together.
  • There have been some prior bugs related to race conditions during upload/linking that would sometimes skip/miss valid photo pairs. These issues have been resolved.
